WHISTLEBLOWING NURSE WINS

John Kay, a nurse disciplined after blowing the whistle on poor elderly care at his Northumbrian hospital, won his industrial tribunal in late November 2001.

The tribunal decided that Mr Kay’s writing to the local newspaper with his concerns was legitimate under the circumstances.

The tribunal said the issues he raised were of “serious public concern”.

Mr Kay said:

“It’s a victory for democratic speech and public service workers to speak out about important issues.”
